DIR EN GREY new album "MORTAL DOWNER" release

As per their official X account, DIR EN GREY's 12th studio album "MORTAL DOWNER" will be released on 04.08.2026.

The album will feature 13 Tracks including The Devil In Me.
Limited edition will contain footage from their TOUR25 蜿蜒 Tour Final at Zepp Haneda and audio from their recent TOUR25 WHO IS THIS HELL FOR? [mode of VULGAR & Withering to death.] dates in the US.

Scant few details so far; no official track listing or samples, but a mysterious partnership with a US-based AI start-up with no resume... Discuss.

It is kind of weird how there's no tracklisting out yet, I feel like in previous album release circuits there's even been samples out by now sometimes. Those titles that were leaked on a store website very much looked like working titles, so I'd be surprised if they remained the same at release.

I've all but lost faith in this band ever releasing anything to my liking again (the last release I completely enjoyed from beginning to end was DSS, and that was a decade and a half ago)... but ofc I will check this out when the time comes.

I'm a bit curious about the whole style and aesthetic they will go for. Hopefully no A.I. ...

They're at a point where everything they put out is an event but it won't affect the scene as a whole nearly as much as it did in 2011. Kizu's album will probably have a wider influence in the grand scheme of things once its out, but that doesn't change the fact that Dir en grey is a singular entity and no one else sounds quite like they do. So I'm looking forward to it, and I enjoyed Phalaris at the time but I'll be honest and say that stopped going back to it an year after the release. I'm also triggered by the awful AI backdrops they use and the serial killer stuff in the lyrics and The Devil In Me PV is just flat out bad.

I don't go back to the later albums as often as I should, but every time I do, I'm reminded that they're actually made up of at least 50% really good tracks, stuff like Kamui is honestly fresh sounding which is an accomplishment for a band as old as Dir.

Somehow did not expect this one to be the token PV track based on its title, nor did I expect it to be 6 minutes long. The PV aesthetics seem nice tho, at least based on what I can see so far.

Can't really say anything about the song itself yet, but I like the vibe of the instrumentals.
